You really want to be using the Gaim 2.0/pidgin port instead of this

A "port" of Devesh's maemo-gaim (http://developer.berlios.de/projects/maemo-gaim/) for the it2006 / mistral, to obtain it, add the following repository to application manager:

You'll also need to have:

in order to get some of the prerequisites (libgcrypt11 and libgpg-error0).

Note, maemo-gaim package no longer includes support for protocols, these need to be installed separately. they should be listed under "Protocols".
