Problem starting xterm on 2006 Final release

Reported by: richw@rawarren.demon.co.uk Assigned to: inz@inz.fi
Priority: low Component: osso-xterm
Version: it2006 Severity: minor
Keywords: won't load Cc:

Description

Hello there, I've recently (yesterday) upgraded my 770 to the final 2006 image SU-18_2006SE_1.2006.26-8_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin . I've then followed your instructions to add the repositories and then used application manager to install osso-xterm version .mh8 (864K). The installation goes ok and xterm appears in the extras menu. However when I click on it I get the "loading" icon for about 10-12 seconds and then nothing. I've rebooted the 770 but no difference, I've uninstalled osso-xterm and reinstalled it but no difference. Am I being premature in expecting this version to work with the final release image ?

regards

Richard Warren

  • priority changed from normal to low.
  • severity changed from normal to minor.

The DL size on fresh install should be ~1.3M (if you already had for example ncurses installed it would be lower). I just tried on the 26-8 image, and the install went smoothly and xterm starts just fine. I'll look more into it when I have time... Setting minor/low as it worked for me.

I'm suffering from exactly the same problem as the original poster.

The download was the size you suggested ~1.3MB.

I'll install ssh and see if I can debug it,

Cheers,

Simon

Some more info if it will help, if I look at the package details inside application manager on the uninstalling tab I get the following:

Uninstalling osso-xterm frees 2.77 MB of device memory Packages to remove:

osso-xterm 0.13.mh8 libvte4 0.12.1-1mh7 libvte-common 0.12.1-1mh7

Is there any significance in the fact that one is mh8 and the other two are mh7 ?

Richard

No, vte and the xterm itself are two totally different packages, and their version numbers don't match. I was hoping that the 1mh7 version of libvte4 would've fixed this issue, as it is linked against newer ncurses, which should always be installed (unless there's some package providing lincurses5, which I really doubt).

Hey, if either of you could md5sum the release (SU-18....bin) you have, so I would know, if the difference is in the images.

Have just had another attempt at installing xterm. I uninstalled xterm, powered off the device and powered back on. Before I tried to install I reviewed the repositories in the application manager. In the repository.maemo.org I had both free and non-free included (which is contrary to your instructions). So I removed non-free and then installed again ...... this time it works perfect !

The only difference I can see is my change to the repository. Interestingly enough it reports differently now in the Application Manager, if I start to uninstall and look at the Uninstalling tab of the details button it now lists two more packages in addition to my previous post. these are libice6 6.3.4-2 and libsm6 6.0.4-3osso1.

So I'm happy but not entirely sure why ?

I'm happy to do an md5sum for you but don't know how to, I'm on ubuntu so if you can tell me what to do I'm happy to do it.

regards

Richard
